"And this Mac and cheese! I didn't know it could be so good." Jean dove into her plate with wild abandon. Her daughters were just as confused as Emma. One minute Jean hated the woman and the next she was practically fawning over her!
"Er, thanks." Emma gave an awkward nod.
<"At least she's being nice,"> Irma offered telepathically.
<"Yep,"> Emma replied flatly. Honestly, Jean's mood swings were wearing her out.
"Uh, Mom?" Celeste asked nervously.
The blonde cocked a brow. "Yes, sweetie?"
"I think Shaw is coming over...right now..."
Jean's eyes narrowed. "More guests?"
"He just wants to drop off your Christmas present," Celeste explained. "He just texted me. He didn't want to tell you because he thought you'd be upset."
Emma rolled her eyes. <"Great. That's all I need right now.">
Jean heard Emma's telepathic comment and perked up. Perhaps her relationship with Shaw wasn't so close to paradise?
For the rest of dinner, Jean was polite but curt. She was curious to meet this Shaw -- who in her mind was her romantic rival and the only person standing between her and Emma.
Rachel and Irma were also curious. They had no idea how this showdown would go...
- Shaw arrives and Jean defends her turf - Shaw arrives only to break up with Emma - Shaw arrives and Emma breaks up with him

"What do you mean rebound?!" Emma, holding a package of summer sausage, cheese, and crackers, questions as her causal boyfriend dumps her just before Christmas!
They stand outside on the Grey Mansion Porch, unaware that everyone inside is ear hustling on this dramatic conversation.
"I was your rebound." Shaw points out. "I know it's been hard on you since Mari left and--"
"Woah, Woah, Woah, Mari and I weren't a couple!" Emma shakes her head.
"... Sure." Shaw rolls his eyes. Everyone in the neighborhood knew damn well what Emma and Mari were. For some reason, the only one in denial about it was Emma!
"It's been fun." Shaw leaves in a hurry. "Take care and Merry Christmas."
Emma's jaw dropped, she can't help but he annoyed.
Yes, Mari helped raise her kids. Yes, Emma helped raise Mari's daughter. Yes, they often shared a bed. Yes, they occasionally kissed. And yes, sex was occasionally on the table but...
<"My goodness, AM I GAY???"> Emma speaks in Spanish.

The public spectacle of Emma's dramatic breakup put an end to dinner. Rachel and Irma cleaned the kitchen while everyone else seemed to split up and remove themselves from the area as quickly as possible. Even Jean -- who was giddy with excitement after seeing Shaw leave. Finally, she could make her move.
But she knew better than to jump right into the deep end. Jean could be oblivious at times but she wasn't stupid. She took a relaxing bath and painted her nails to pass the time. She also kept an eye on the cameras she had stationed around the house and outer grounds. When Emma came waddling up to the main house at around midnight, she was ready to pounce.
Dressed in a green robe, Jean came slithering down the stairs and into the kitchen. She spotted Emma slumped over a stool, shoveling Black Forest cake into her greedy mouth. Her eyes were bloodshot from crying and she was wearing worn out PJs that did little to disguise her matronly figure and, best of all (for Jean), her many tattoos. It was the first time she'd worn something with short sleeves. All those dated, stretched tattoos were out in the open and Jean loved it!
"Oh...Jean. Sorry -- I was just really craving this cake," Emma explained.
"And we missed desert," Jean added with a smile. "No need to apologize. You deserve cake after today." She leaned against the counter, getting closer to her target.
"Yeah. It's been...rough. Shaw and I hadn't been seeing each other for too long but...still. It was nice."
Jean nodded and leaned over a little, trying her best to show off her bulging cleavage. She was thicker than she used to be but she knew she still had a pretty nice body. Emma, unfortunately, was too preoccupied by her cake to notice.
"He said...he said I couldn't get over Mari." Emma paused and sighed. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't be putting this all on you --"
"Please." Jean reached across the counter and grabbed Emma's plump wrist. "Tell me."
"Oh, uh...okay?" Emma took another bite and slowly chewed and swallowed. "Mari was Logan's...friend. More than friend, really. He was the father of her child."
Jean raised a brow but didn't say anything.
"Logan and I weren't married and I knew he had affairs. He's immortal -- I wasn't going to try and pin the guy down. I wasn't even mad when he showed up one day with Mari and Yumi. It was kind of nice, actually. Having another woman around. Helping with the kids. And Yumi was so cute."
Jean remained uncharacteristically silent but kept her eyes locked on Emma.
"Logan wasn't around all that often so Mari and I spent a lot of time together. And...I don't know. I thought we were just really close."
"Friends? Or...?" Jean guessed.
"I never wanted to admit it. I mean, I like men. I'm attracted to men. But I can't deny...Mari was more than a friend."
Jean nodded. "So you...like women?"
"I guess so."
"Hmm." Jean dipped a finger into the icing on Emma's slice of cake. She licked it off teasingly. "Well I do too."
- Jean kisses Emma - Emma runs off -- this is wayyy too much!

"Okay, so uh... Jean-Jean hit on me." Emma explains to Irma and Rachel at 3 in the morning.
"... Okay." Irma looks surprised. Rachel can't help but smile.
"Did you..."
"No, I ran off." Emma shakes her head. "It's not that your mom isn't attractive, Rachel." Emma admits. "I just figured out I've been in a long term relationship with a woman for 18 years."
"... How did you just figure that out, Mom?!" Irma shakes her head. "Jesus, I... you realize we got picked on a lot at school for having two moms right?!"
"... I think I've been in denial." Emma shrugs her spongy shoulders. "But I've thought about it and..."
-"It'd be awkward having a romantic relationship with my soon to be in-law. I'm going to politely tell Jean I'm not interest." -"I'm going to tell Mari how sorry I am. I finally get it. She wanted full commitment from me... I'm so stupid, she left me because I didn't think about what our relationship really was!" -Something else

"Mari deserves a call. Looking back, I treated her so poorly...I'm sure she would've stuck around if I had asked her to. If I had asked her..." Emma shook her head. "Sorry girls. I just needed someone to vent to. I'll be leaving..."
"It's okay, Mom. I'm honestly kinda stunned you didn't understand what was going on with you and Mari...but I'm glad you're coming to terms with who you are. And to reiterate -- there's nothing wrong with being gay." Irma looked at her girlfriend who smiled.
"I know, I know. I guess old dogs can learn new tricks," Emma joked.
She made the trek back to her own room in the guest house. When she arrived, she wasted no time getting out her cell phone and calling the number Mari gave her almost a year ago. She'd kept the Japanese number but never called it. She wasn't sure why but now she knew. It was because she couldn't face what she felt.
<"Hello?"> a feminine voice asked in Japanese.
Emma smiled at that familiar voice. She'd missed that. "Hi, Mari. It's Emma."
There was a long silence. And then, "Finally worked up the courage to call?"
Emma rubbed the back of her neck nervously. "Yeah. Yeah, I just...I needed to tell you that I'm sorry. For everything. I know now that we had a real relationship -- a great relationship. And I kinda messed it all up."
"Kinda?"
"Really messed it up."
"I never understood why you couldn't just see what was right in front of you. You were so willfully blind," Mari said. She sounded tired just saying it. Emma couldn't believe Mari put up with her for as long as she did. Though, they did have a lot of fun together. The most fun either of them had ever had.
"It took a butcher named Shaw breaking up with me tonight for me to realize that!" Emma laughed sadly. "Oh, and my future in-law flirting with me." She paused. "Are you happy in Japan? With Logan?"
"Japan is home. And so is Logan, in a way. I'm happy here -- I really am."
"That's good." Emma couldn't hide the disappointment in her voice. A small part of her wanted Mari to be unhappy -- so unhappy that she moved back to the US.
"I hope you find someone who makes you happy, Emma. In your case, I'd recommend a woman. You were always more than happy to go down on me. Merry Christmas."
Emma heard the other line click. "Damn. She was always blunt."
The fat blonde flopped down on the bed, causing the springs to squeak. The realization that she was gay was huge -- but realizing Mari was gone for good was bigger. She had loved her, in her own way.
But she wasn't coming back. So what's Emma going to do?

"I want to apologize for running off after you tried to kiss me." Emma, outside in the backyard with Jean after a hearty breakfast, points out with Jean's eyes all over her breasts.
"It's okay." Jean smirks. "But I will get upset if you do that again." Jean winks.
"You're very attractive... but I just realized I was in a lesbian relationship for 18 years!" Emma laughs, her jelly and chest jiggling to Jean's liking. "... Also, I don't think it's appropriate to have a romantic relationship with my future in-law. What if it doesn't work out? What things get awkward? We're going to have to be a part of each other's lives for a while. We could have grandkids pretty soon and--"

It's been a long time since Emma felt soft, feminine lips against her own lips. Shaw had a messy, hairy kiss and so did Logan. But Mari...her kisses were always sweet and light and soft. Emma didn't really register what was going on until she opened her eyes and saw Jean's bright red hair. That kicked her out of her trance.
"I just -- did you really just kiss me?!"
Jean blinked. "Well, yeah. You're gay -- you just admitted that. You also called me attractive. I'm pushing 50 here -- I can't wait around forever for you, Emmy."
Emma winced at the pet name. This just kept getting weirder and weirder. "Wait around? Jean, we're going to be in-laws, we can't --"
Jean held a finger up to Emma's lips. The blonde immediately quieted. "Emma, I've waited a long time for you."
Emma raised a pierced brow. "What're you talking about?"
Jean sighed. "I...when you attacked my school...well, I'd never really thought I was attracted to girls before. But you! You were so different. With your tattoos and leather and piercings. We didn't have anyone like that at my school. I was smitten. To put it lightly." The redhead blushed.
"You had a crush on me? After I terrorized your high school and seriously injured your teacher?"
Jean kept a tight lip and nodded.
"Gotta say...I really never expected any of this to happen. Wow."
"Look, our kids are adults and we're adults. If we want to have something consensual, what's wrong with that? I think we should go for it."
"You barely know me," Emma said firmly.
Jean shrugged. "So? I know I find you attractive."
"You really do?" Emma wasn't blind -- she knew Jean was way out of her league. It was amazing how attractive Jean thought she was.
"Of course! Are you kidding? You're beautiful, Emma."
Emma... - Decides to try being with Jean - Turns Jean's down and decides to go back to M Town

(One year later)
It's Christmas time in M-Town and Emma's cafe, the Greys and the Frost decorated a Christmas tree.
"... It's been a weird year." Hope whispers to her sister, Madeline.
"Right?" Celeste chimes in, tinsel in hand, point to her mother sitting happily in a booth with Jean, both wearing matching red Christmas Sweaters.
As they smooch, the four girls crinkle their noses. It's been tough, but as long as their moms are happy!
"I can't believe you're having a baby!" Natalie gushes as carries a bag of presents to the tree. Her sister, Rachel, dressed in a green maternity dress, glowing with pride, her arm linked with her wife, a hand on her round middle, smiles brightly.
"I can't wait to be a grandma!" Jean chimes in. "I'm going to spoil her rotten!"
"Now, Jeannie, it could be a boy." Emma points out.
Jean scoffs at the idea.
"Nonsense! Don't jinx it, Emmy, we're getting a granddaughter."
As Rachel rolls her eyes, her wife gives her a peck on the cheek and telepathically comforts the expecting mother.
<"Hey, you wanted them to get along.">
The night ends with Chinese Takeout, a gift exchange, and a rather passionate one on one between Jean and Emma.
THE END 🎄
